Baby Shower Gifts that Moms Recommend

Currently seven months pregnant with my first child, my head began spinning with information from the time we made the announcement.

Well-wishing family, friends and total strangers (of all ages) now begin their sentences with, “Something you absolutely need for your baby is…” or “You will never use…” or “Don’t buy X. It’s a waste of money!” The advice was something I definitely wanted and needed, but the fact that most of the advice was contradictory left me confused.

I wanted to be able to know what advice was helpful most moms my age.

In order to get a better understanding of what moms my age were saying, I developed a survey for new moms via Facebook and email, I passed the survey along to as many new moms as I could. Over about three months, I was able to get 58 responses from mothers my age (from 18 to 30 years old). The following information was taken from the data gathered in my survey.

Reactions to Baby Shower Gifts

Many moms wished they had received less clothing, especially newborn clothing.

Moms who were planning on using cloth diapers instead of disposable really appreciated receiving them as gifts.

Most moms mentioned they were thankful for all the diapering supplies they received, but wished they had received more size 1-2 diaper, since babies quickly outgrow the newborn size.

Moms particularly raved about nursing supplies, such as breast pumps (Medela was the most popular brand), nursing pads, breast milk storage containers/bags, nursing breast cream, and the Boppy Pillow. Before buying these items, though, check with the mother, spouse or hostess as to whether or not the momma-to-be plans to breastfeed.

Many moms said they appreciated gift certificates.

96% of the moms I surveyed were given a baby shower. 87% of these moms created a baby registry; 17% of which registered at at least one online only store (such as Amazon.com). 21% of hostesses did not tell guests where the mother-to-be was registered. 44% of women said that half or more of the gifts they received were not on their registry. The majority of women either returned gifts they could not use or donated them to charity or another family. Only 25% decided to keep the gifts they could not use.
